According to Thai and Chinese resources, on October 9, 2017, the first ten Chinese main tanks VT4 (MBT-3000), acquired under the contract of 2016, were delivered to Thailand. It is indicated that the tanks entered the disposal of the 3rd Cavalry Division of the Thai Army in Nam Phong in the north of Thailand. Thailand signed a contract with the Chinese group NORINCO to acquire the first 28 tanks VT4 (MBT-3000) on April 21, 2016. Delivery must be made within two years. According to Chinese sources, in May 2017 Thailand signed an additional contract for the purchase of another 21 tanks VT4. Thailand became the first customer of VT4, the newest export main tank for the development and production of the Chinese industrial corporation China North Industries Group Corp. (CGNC, better known under the NORINCO brand). Tanks are manufactured in Baotou (Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region), part of the CGNC company Inner Mongolia First Machinery Group Company (known as Plant No. 617),

In February 2016 it was reportedthat the Thai army received approval for allocating budget allocations of 8.99745 billion baht (about $ 251 million) for three years (2016-2018 fiscal years) for the purchase of 51 new tanks.

According to the Thai comments, the army of Thailand appealed to the purchase of VT4 due to the constant delay in supply of BM Oplot-T tanks from Ukraine under the contract of 2011 (by now Thailand has received only 25 Oplot-T from 49 ordered tanks).
