Hanwha Defence Systems, AVP unveil Tigon armoured wheeled vehicle

South Korean company Hanwha Defense Systems and Malaysia’s AVP Engineering unveiled the Tigon 6x6 armoured wheeled vehicle at the 16-19 April Defence Services Asia 2018 (DSA 2018) exhibition in Kuala Lumpur.

Based on Hanwha’s 6x6 Black Fox armoured vehicle, the Tigon is aimed at Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern markets, with the two partnering companies currently focused on offering the platform to the Malaysian Army (MA).

“The vehicle can function as an armoured personnel carrier [APC] by accommodating up to 11 personnel, including a driver, a commander, and a gunner, and is capable of carrying out missions as part of an army’s mechanised infantry units,” a Hanwha Defense Systems official told Jane’s.

The Tigon, which will soon undergo trials with the MA, can be armed with various weapon systems, with the platform at DSA 2018 being shown fitted with a 12.7 mm remote weapon station (RWS). The vehicle can also be armed with two other types of RWSs to fit either a 30 mm machine gun or a 90 mm cannon.

The new vehicle is not only heavier (between 21 tonnes and 22 tonnes depending on the selected armament) than the Black Fox (18 tonnes), but also features an increased level of protection against machine gun fire, mines, and improvised explosive devices, said the official, without providing further details.
