The Philippines is poised to acquire more C-130 planes from the United States as part of its modernization efforts, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said on Tuesday.
“Yes, we are acquiring several more C-130s,” Lorenzana confirmed before reporters in a chance interview after the Special Airborne Mission Installation and Response (SABIR) system was handed over to the Philippines at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City.
The US government, represented by its ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim, turned over the P807-million system, which will be attached to an aircraft, particularly to the C-130.
Lorenzana said the military is wishing to have a C-130 plane dedicated only to intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) operations.
“Like a plane that will not be used for other matters, just for the ISR [operations],” he added.
At present, the Philippine Air Force has five C-130 planes, which are being used for transporting troops and relief goods to places stricken by typhoons.
